2017 Seniors pick their COLLEGES

Congratulations to this special group of seniors on making their commitments to throw at the college level next year. Madison Throws Club is proud of  all they have accomplished in their first 3 years in high school, excited they have 1 more year to push the envelope, and happy that they will have the opportunity to compete in college.   Countless hours of training, determination, and dedication, have led to this...from everyone at MTC - CONGRATULATIONS!

Throw Big, Throw Far,
Coach Frontier

ERIN DUNNING - Ashwaubenon High School
Erin will be attending the University of Minnesota to throw for Coach Peter Miller and compete in the BIG TEN Conference.  Erin won the 2016 WIAA D1 Girls State Shot Put crown as a junior after a runner-up finish as a sophomore. Her P.R. of 46' 9.5" in the Shot Put is the 7th best throw in Wisconsin State history.  She saw big improvements in the Discus as a junior finishing the season with a P.R. of 143' 7" and finished 4th at State.  Good luck future Gopher!

RHYS ENDERLE, Madison West High School
Rhys will be attending Bucknell University.  Rhys swept the Madison City Outdoor Shot put and Discus titles as a junior. His 49'11" shot P.R. and 145' 3" discus P.R. are huge improvements, yet are just a hint of what he is capable of in the future.  Best of luck Rhys as you join the Bison of Bucknell.

KELSEY JUDGE, Baraboo High School
Kelsey will be attending Winona State University.  Kelsey finished her junior year with a 6th place finish in the D1 discus at the WIAA State Meet and a P.R. of 132'4".  She has thrown 38'1" in the shot put as well.  Good Luck Kelsey as you join Coach Mike Turgeon's D2 womens powerhouse throws squad!

TESS KEYZERS, Little Chute High School
Tess will be attending the University of Minnesota along with Erin Dunning.  Tess won the WIAA State D2 Girls Shot Put title both her sophomore and junior year.  Doing it grand fashion in 2016 with a P.R. of 47'3" shattering the D2 record by over 2 feet.  Her shot put P.R. is the 6th best throw in Wisconsin state history. Good luck future Gopher!

JOSIE SCHAEFER, Baraboo High School
Josie will be attending the University of Wisconsin to throw for Coach Dave Astrauskas.  Josie followed up successful frosh and soph seasons in the discus by winning the 2016 WIAA State D1 Discus title. She closed out the summer with a 3rd Place finish at the USATF Junior Championships where she had the best discus throw in Wisconsin state history 176'3". With a senior season to go Josie potentially could move the all-time mark even higher!  Josie had breakout year in the shot put switching from glide to rotational, she moved her P.R. out 7 feet to 45'8" winning the WTFA State Indoor meet. Best of luck in Badger Red!

CONNOR WECKERLY, Sycamore High School (Il.)
Connor will be attending the University of Mississippi to throw from legendary Coach John Smith.  Connor's P.R.s of 49'10" and 162' 9" from junior year  at Baraboo High School are just the tip of the iceberg. Connor's work this off-season portent big things for his senior season at his new high school.  Good luck at Ole Miss.

Baumann and Long win NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

NCAA INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP weekend is always fun,  I think I wore out the refresh button as I was watched the live results of the DI, DII, and DIII meets all at the same time.  What made it even more fun was that a pair of Madison Throws Club Alumni came out on Top in their respective events

Kaitlyn Long (So. Winona State) defended her Indoor National Championship in the NCAA DII Women's Weight Throw.  Her winning throw 74'5.75" shattered the championship meet record of 69'0.75" and bested her own NCAA DII record of 73' 0".  She finishes the indoor season with the best throw in the nation in all divisions.

Theron Baumann (So. UW-Whitewater) bounced back in a big way from a tough WIAC conference meet that saw him scratch all 3 of his attempts in the shot put.  The WIAC meet will be a distant memory after Theron bested the field to win the NCAA DIII Men's Shot Put National Indoor Championship.  Baumann's throw of 58' 3" is collegiate career best and breaks his own UW-Whitewater school record.

YouTUBE: Madison Throws Club

I started a new YouTUBE Channel devoted to throwing drills. There are a lot of good sources out there already with great drills and throwing videos.  However, I hope that I can contribute in some way to the success of your throwing or your throws coaching.

There are still lots of videos from meets in Wisconsin and beyond on my other YouTUBE Channel.

Congrats Kaitlyn Long

Just in case you missed it...CONGRATS to Winona State's Kaitlyn Long (SO.) on her National Record in the weight throw!  This might need updating...there are a lot of meets left in the season and the next, and oh the next after that!  Keep working hard! Madison Throws Club is so proud of you!

Check out more info about Winona State Womens Track and Field here.

2015 MTC - The year's best

As Madison Throws Club enters it's 15th year and the calendar flips from 2015 to 2016, I thought it would be appropriate to look back on some of the amazing things MTC athletes accomplished in 2015.  So proud of these throwers and all that they have done.

10. 5 Madison Throws Club athletes from the class of 2016 sign with D1 colleges to continue their throwing careers at the NCAA level. We can't wait to see what these seniors do this year and beyond! Holly Houston (Madison Memorial '16) - Montana, Sam Noennig (Hartford 16') - Arizona State, Kris Lindow (Ashwaubenon '16) - Dayton, Mikaela Grant (Jefferson '16) - Central Michigan and Landon Ellingson (Jefferson '16) - Stanford.  Stay tuned a 6th could be signing soon.

9. Chloe Eckstein (Reedsville '15) won the WIAA D3 State Discus title.  Chloe's 4 years of hard work allow her to break through in a big way at her final state meet.  Chloe claims the 24th WIAA State SHOT PUT or DISCUS championship by a Madison Throws Club athlete.

8. Theron Baumann (Monona Grove '12) competed in his first season at UW-Whitewater.  He broke the UW-W Shot Put record both indoors 57' 0.75" and outdoors 57'11".  He was an NCAA D3 All-American in the Shot Put indoors (8th) and outdoors (3rd) while finishing 13th in the discus.  Excited to see what Theron will do as a follow up in 2016.

7. Sam Noennig won the 2015 WIAA D1 Shot Put title. Sam lead a 1-2-3 MTC sweep of the D1 Shot with Erin Dunning (Ashwaubenon '17) and Kris Lindow finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively.
This is the 4th time MTC athletes have swept the top 3 spots in a division, D1 Boys Discus in 2011 and 2012, Girls Discus in 2013.
While MTC has had boys sweep the throwing events (see #3), Sam become the first MTC girl to double in the same year (see #6).

6. Sam Noennig defended her 2014 WIAA D1 State Discus title.  Sam P.R.d at the biggest meet of the year for the second consecutive year.  Her throw of 161'6" was the 2nd best girls discus performance from any division in WIAA State Meet history.  In an ultra competitive field including Josie Schaefer, Holly Houston and others every inch was needed.

5. Josie Schaefer (Baraboo '17) Samantha Noennig and Holly Houston  each had monster discus throws that moved them up/on the Top 50 of all time list. Josie's throw of 169' 4" is the 2nd best throw in Wisconsin prep history.  Sam's throw of 161'6" ranks 6th all-time.  Holly's throw of 150'1" ranks 16th.  The 3 girls competed at the same meet on 3 occasions in 2015, each winning once. Amazing to see 3 of the all-time best train and compete with each other.

4. Jason Zahn (Grafton '12) competing in his Junior season at NCAA D2 throwing powerhouse ASHLAND UNIVERSITY finished runner-up at the D2 NCAA National meet in the Discus.  The former WIAA state champ improved to 185'8" with the 2k implement.  Jason enters his senior looking to make more noise in the discus and shot put as well.

3. Tucker Wedig (Belmont '15) completes a double sweep defending both his 2014 WIAA D3 State Shot Put and Discus titles successfully.  With 4 State Championships, Tucker is the most decorated MTC athlete at the State Meet.

2. Kaitlyn Long (Monona Grove '14) competing in her first year at NCAA D2 Winona State wins the 2015 NCAA NATIONAL TITLE in the WEIGHT THROW.  In her first year training in the event Kaitlyn's 68'9" P.R. is the 6th farthest throw in D2 History.  Can't wait to see what happens over the next 3 years!

1. Samantha Noennig and Josie Schaefer are chosen for the 2 girls discus spots for TEAM USA at the 2015 World Youth Championships in Cali, Columbia.  Josie and Sam finished 1st and 2nd respectively at the US Youth Championships in July to qualify for the team, based on their strong resumes both were selected to the team.  Josie finished 7th while Sam finished 20th in the world in the 17 and under competition.

WIAA Boys State Discus Record - Luke Sullivan 193'3"

Luke Sullivan's record 193'3" discus throw at the 1993 WIAA STATE Track and Field Championships has stood the test of time. Its one of the oldest records in the books.   State records can only be set at the WIAA state meet.  Luke was a junior at Verona High School and despite winning his third state championship his senior year he couldn't top his own mark on the day of the meet, despite throwing 198'11" that season.  We've seen a lot of good discus throwers since 1993, but none have been able to produce the magic Luke created in 1993.  If records are made to be broken, it will take someone with a lot of hard-work, determination, great technique, and most importantly the guts to not succumb to the pressure state meet can produce.

Until then, keep watching this video and stay hungry.
