2016 NCAA INDOOR CONFERENCE RESULTS

Follow MTC Alumni throwing for their schools this weekend in their respective College Conference Meets.  Here are the links to LIVE RESULTS for most of the conferences represented.

BIG TEN INDOOR CHAMIONSHIPS (D1)
HORIZON LEAGUE CHAMPIONSHIPS (D1)
BIG EAST INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (D1)
BIG SKY INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (D1)
NORTHERN SUN (NSIC) CHAMPIONSHIPS (D2)
GLIAC CHAMPIONSHIPS (D2)
WIAC INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS (D3)

HOW DO YOU STACK UP?
While you are at it check out how you stack up against some of these throwers.  Girls still throw 4k Shot Puts in college so High School GIRLS throwers can compare where they are at directly with these results.
High School BOYS throw 12lb shot puts and move to 16lb in college. I typically see an average drop off of about 2ft per pound from SR's in High School to FR in college.

Congrats Kaitlyn Long

Just in case you missed it...CONGRATS to Winona State's Kaitlyn Long (SO.) on her National Record in the weight throw!  This might need updating...there are a lot of meets left in the season and the next, and oh the next after that!  Keep working hard! Madison Throws Club is so proud of you!

Don't Scratch Your First Throw

Great article from Martin Bingisser and HMMR Media analyzing first throw scratches at the 2015 World Track and Field Championships in Beijing.

Looking at all of the throwers at the 2015 World Championships in Men's and Women's Shot Put, Discus, Hammer, and Javelin 20% of their first throws were scratches.  In the qualifying round, throwers who scratched had a 27.9% chance of moving on from qualifying.  Athletes that had a legal first throw nearly doubled their chance to make the final at 52.4%.
In the preliminary round the numbers did not change much. 22% of throwers with a first round foul earned 3 more throws in the final.  While 44% of throwers with first throw marks moved on to the top 8.

Many factors, not just pure probability of first round fouls play into making it into finals at any meet. But I do think the importance of having a mark on your first throw as meets get bigger and the competition is at its highest, can not be overlooked.  Things like psychology and pressure DO factor in here as well as experience. Please read the article for more details!

One important thing to remember during your training is to not practice fouling!  I see a lot throwers scratch every throw during a warm-up and then have to drastically change what they do during the competition to get a mark.  Practice how you want to compete. If you scratch a lot during practice slow down, find a way to stay in the ring, then add speed back in slowly and see if you can continue to stay in the ring.  When you have a legal throw on throw number 1, it can make the rest of your competition much easier to approach.

Not only can having a mark on your first attempt take a lot of pressure off of yourself it can allow you to chase big throws on your next 2 attempts.  But it opens the possibility of other impacts as well. Having a mark that is a BIG throw in the first round can put pressure on your competitors.  I've watched plenty of competitions where a big first round mark weighs heavily on the rest of the field. And despite there being talented throwers capable of out throwing your big mark, the psychology of them having to chase you can change their outcomes drastically.

Read the article for more, and watch some of the big throws at the Worlds below...
Enjoy.

MTC start the High School season with BIG THROWS

A huge thank you to the numerous athletes that committed to working hard this off-season and allowing Madison Throws Club to guide their training in the circle this past summer, fall, and winter.
Now it is time to compete.  The 2015 Wisconsin high school season has begun and its a 12 week journey of adjustments and continued growth with your high school coaches.  Best of luck to everyone, keep me posted on P.R.s!

Some throwers wasted no time to allow their hard work to shine through.  2 junior girls started the season with BIG THROWS.  Harford's Samantha Noennig and Ashwaubenon's Kristine Lindow both have set new P.R.'s at early indoor meets.  On Saturday, March 21, Noennig threw 45'4" at the Invite held at Carthage college.  Her throw is the 24th best in Wisconsin prep history.  Lindow wasted no time going 42'11" for a new P.R. in the shot put a few days later.

The Sam and Kris rank 1st and 2nd in the state.   Karen Wethal and Holly Houston out to strong starts as well, both with early season P.R.'s.   Keep track of the Girls STATE HONOR ROLL at Dave Figi's fantastic site covering Wisconsin Prep Girls Track and Field!  www.wisconsintrackonline.com

Good Luck as the new School Year begins

What will it take to get to STATE?

I just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone the best of luck as the new school year begins.  Good luck with your fall sports and your classwork.  However, luck has little to do with it...hard work, consistent effort, dedication, and determination will have more to do with your results than luck ever will.

I know many of you set goals for track and field, have you done the same for your course work? Your fall sport?  Take the time and write some goals down.  You might be surprised that looking at things from a goal oriented standpoint rather then just willy-nilly can impact your results.

How do I set classroom goals?  Getting an A would be an end goal, but less important than the intermediate goals i.e.  1. turn in all homework on time.  2. spend .5 hours each weekend reviewing what happened in class the previous week..  Goals must have some way to determine whether or not you are meeting them or not.  Do better- is not a goal.  I can keep track of .5 hour or my assignments. End goals are nice, but if you only have  an end goal you often can't fix the reason you didn't achieve it - until it is too late.

Which brings me to track and field.  Have you set goals for this year?  You might be saying 'no' - track isn't until spring, but there are lots of things you could be doing to accomplish your goals for track right now.  Set smaller goals: weight room, plyos, agilities, drills, clinics, doing a fall sport, winter sport, heck even your class room goals have an impact on Track - remember that there is no ability without eligibility.

Its never to soon to set goals, its never too soon to start working toward achieving them.  Most importantly, once you achieve or do not achieve a goal, its important to set a new goal.

Good luck,
Coach Frontier

THE ROAD to STATE

The road to STATE.

The road to State, often takes twists and turns.  Sometimes it takes 4 years to get there, sometime even more. It takes countless hours in the weight room.  Thousands of drills. Thousands of throws.  It can take a little luck, but I believe that luck favors the prepared...
And you are ready, you've put in the time, even extra time.  Trust that the reps, drills, and throws have put you in a position to be your best when you need to be.
Good luck at Regionals, Sectionals and State.

Coach Frontier
